How to Start an Emergency Fire with Jumper Cables

A couple years ago I was in need of a fire. I was on a spur of the moment camping trip and I needed to cook some food and keep warm that evening. Since I wasn’t going to drive 1 hour to the nearest store to buy a lighter, if I wanted a fire I was going to have to get tricky. Basically I learned how to start a fire using hand sanitizer and jumper cables. Alcohol based hand sanitizer is very flammable and it burns extremely hot. Here is how I did it:

  • Gather up some small easily combustible items such as dried grass, small dried sticks for kindling and set them down where you want your fire.
  • Attach the jumper cables to your car and get them nice and close to the desired fire area so they are ready.
  • Spray the kindling with a generous amount of sanitizer and click the ends of the jumper cables together to make a very large spark. This should easily ignite the alcohol and you’ll be all set. Be sure to make sure all of your wood is ready so that it can be stacked onto the fire when its ready for some bigger pieces.
